RECIPIENT CARE
How to care for your pregnant recipient mare
Your recipient mare must be cared for properly to ensure the birth of a healthy foal.
TIPS INCLUDE:
1.
SEPARATE PADDOCK…
Pregnant recipient mares should be kept in an area separate from other non-pregnant mares, young stock, and geldings. Other horses could transmit viruses or other diseases causing abortion.
2.
REDUCE STRESS...
Stressful activities such as extensive transport, changing of herd, and rapid nutritional changes should be avoided.
3.
AMPLE FEED…
Pregnant recipient mares should be kept in a paddock with ample feed and supplemented feed as needed especially during late-term pregnancy.
4.
VACCINATIONS…
Tetanus/Strangles/Salmonella vaccination is recommended 6 weeks before projected foaling date.
5.
CASLICK DATE...
If mare is caslicked, she needs to be opened about 3-4 weeks before estimated foaling date.
6.
SUPERVISION…
Foaling paddocks should be clean and safe with as much supervision as possible.
If something should happen to the recipient mare while she is in your care, please inform Dr. Simson and get an appropriate veterinary report.
PLEASE REMEMBER…
Please remember that 4-6% of pregnancies will not carry to term for various reasons, many of which are unknown. This is a risk that horse breeders take with each pregnancy. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee this recipient mare will have a live foal. We do know that when the recipient leaves Carmyle, it has been managed properly and is carrying a live foal. After that point, it is up to the client to carefully look after the recipient mare. Clients are welcome to call Dr. Simson with any questions or concerns throughout the pregnancy term of the mare.
If something should happen to the recipient mare while she is in your care, please inform Dr. Simson and get an appropriate veterinary report.
Please remember that recipient mares are ever only under lease by the client; the recipient should be returned to Carmyle in good condition after weaning the foal, approximately 18 months after the embryo transfer date. The client agrees to these conditions by payment of the invoice for the recipient mare rental.
